Van Gogh irisesThere’s a few different romances that get developed over the course of BICP…but a splash panel this big devoted to a tender moment is pretty rare, isn’t it?

Even rarer: a big panel devoted to a Being having private feelings. Not performing or interacting with any humans, their Master fast asleep, showing what the Being does of its own volition when nobody’s watching.

Since Kara Lynn spends so much time being quiet, and her expressions tend to be more muted/blank than a lot of other characters, even when she’s not literally frozen in place…maybe it’s more important to give her moments like this, just so you have as much sense of her personality as you do with the rest of the cast.

Coffee mug labeled I'd Rather Be SleepingA scrupulous Master like Miranda would’ve given a more explicit order here. A nervous Being like Patrick probably would’ve asked for confirmation. And if there was some important event coming up that the Master genuinely didn’t want to sleep through, most Beings would respond to that, and faithfully act as the short-term alarm clock their Master was asking for.

Kara Lynn pulls a more Cybele-esque move here, combining “you didn’t technically say not to do this” and “I know on some level this is what you really want” to interpret this as “I will let you sleep through the night.”

fancy hotel lobbyYou almost feel bad for Blake and Walker. They’re going through a whole developed routine, wooing Jany the same way they’d court a major new corporate client…and Jany’s like “sweet, this has basic cable and air conditioning!”

The huge paintings on the walls are public-domain artwork. Museums have made so many beautiful high-res scans available of their art collections — if you don’t look through them for resources, you’re missing out.

Those weren’t actually developed to work together, but by gosh she’ll do her best.

Tiger catgirl cosplayPlot twist alternate ending: Walker looks up “anime” and “cosplay”, falls completely down the rabbit hole of otaku-dom, and where a normal person would go broke trying to buy DVDs and figures, she burns through her whole fortune to license all her new favorites so she doesn’t have to rely on bootlegs.

…although clearly she’d have to hold some back for her Fancy Limo budget. (Jany definitely got that can of soda from the built-in fridge.)

Haruka and Michiru soft with rose petalsAnd speaking of Beings shifting into new shapes, Blake makes the debut of their Teenage Lesbian Bait form.

This was always supposed to give the same impression as the classic “Haruka and Michiru just walked into frame, and the background music turns into a chorus gently cooing over their perfection.”

…which I do think worked much better once I did the trade-paperback remaster, having learned in the meantime how to apply a bunch of Soft Glow Blur filtering.

Sunny Chicago skylineSome readers thought the rude airplane guy might be Cub. I think I changed his design in the trade-paperback remastering, to make the resemblance less dramatic.

And so we arrive in “the reason why I have a whole folder of reference photos for Chicago.” Walker’s earlier Shine incarnation is based in the same city, so it seems likely it was a reference to Little Orphan Annie being created for the Chicago Tribune.

New Patrick form! And with seriously fancy details on the earrings and the shirt, there. I wanted this design to be not quite like anything we’ve seen Patrick in before, so he’s not collared-shirt professional like his default Cohen form, not model-hot like the woman he’s played for Cohen before, not as young or T-shirt casual as his default Bianca form, definitely not as young and cute as any of his little-kid forms.

Still the same face shape as he usually has, though. And he kept the ponytail. (Miranda probably would’ve clocked him in a second if he kept the stripe.)

Okay, here, have a meme about “potentially having sex with a bird who is currently human-shaped” instead.

Not that Miranda and Poe are having sex, mind you. She’s using the same “of course you’d see me hanging out with my boyfriend all the time, and it’s not weird if my boyfriend comes up in conversation, there’s no reason to expect me to have a Being if all of this is explained just fine by me having a boyfriend” cover story with Cohen as she does with her friends.

And, geez, Stu, if you’re trying to show genuine and open-hearted interest in your daughter’s life by wanting to meet her partner, you’re doing a really bad job of it.

Naresh IyerJany is a reworked version of a character named Jean, and Naresh is a very, very loose adaptation of Jean’s brother, who was named…Nick.

Did I have better luck with renaming when it came to Naresh? On the one hand, I can find a lot more actual humans with that first name. On the other, very few of them were born later than 1970. (Pictured: Naresh Iyer, one of the rare exceptions.)

Either way: clearly Madelyn/Madison/Addison isn’t bad with names because of racism, she’s just seeing past the 4th wall.
