cartoon light bulb over headOh look, Bennett does have one (1) good, valid, not-an-obvious-fallacy reason for putting his trust where it is.

Now I remember, this was the second of the “revealed the existence of the same sneaking-in Being twice” scenes. Tweaked in the remaster to make the more general point that Bennett knows some things about Cohen’s deal — and knows he can make Cohen nervous, even without actually having the background knowledge to explain why.

Little energy-efficient lightbulb going off over the head, there. It’s not a commentary on Bennett’s environmental positions, I just want to treat these as a generic standard. (Even when it comes to their use in cartoon graphics.)

Cybele having visibly-lighter palms, at least in this scene, is a detail I added in the trade-paperback remastering. It happens IRL, but it’s not a trait I see a lot in cartoons/animation outside of really awful blackface caricatures, so it seemed like a thing to avoid. Then some art by a black character designer came across one of my social-media feeds, with the caption lamenting how nobody does it in a realistic way, and I thought, okay, here’s a non-caricature model I can reference.

I didn’t do it for any of the human characters, like Bianca, because making sure it stayed consistent over the entire course of the comic seemed like too big a job. With the Beings, it can just show up for the length of a given appearance, and even if I forget to draw it the next time, no big deal.

Colbert with rainbow flagSo…all of Bennett’s reasons for trusting Cohen are objectively bad, huh.

He’s ultimately not wrong, but it’s for all the wrong reasons. He doesn’t have specific knowledge about Cohen loving Miranda — it’s just an assumption. Walker is hella untrustworthy, but that’s not because she’s a woman. (Hearing Cybele say that out loud might prompt Bennett to give it a little thought beyond the sexist reasons…)

And “I want to impress this person because I have a crush on them and want them to say nice things about me” is no guarantee that they’re trustworthy! Just…thirst-worthy.

Cute girl in pink dressThe one where Bennett stops to ask for someone else’s input! While sounding like he has a sincere interest, and plans to listen and take it seriously, even! It’s almost like he’s having positive character development, here.

…but not too much development all at once, which is why Cybele shows off a rare human-form-to-different-human form transformation.

Chuck Grassley with an angry dragon diagramIn the main present-day storyline, we cut from “Sparrow talking about being an evil minion” to “Congressional pages.” Commentary?

These charts are…not much of an exaggeration, honestly. (Chris Murray did one that was a literal ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ at some point, but he was criticizing the lack of detail in a Republican plan, not presenting it as all the detail you need.)

I like Cybele’s page design. She’s extremely cute.

Annotated Chapter 16 Cover – American Girls

Captain America coverAnother cover where I’ve lost track of the original. My notes say it was a Captain America cover — and I remember that Sparrow’s pose took the place of Cap’s, with her sign in place of the shield — but can’t for the life of me find the actual image.

In its place, here’s a Marvel cover with some Pietá Plagiarism going on. If I find the original, I’ll swap it in.

This is also another promo image where I drew “a themed collection of human characters, but also Cybele.” Needed someone for a red stripe, and she was the best fit — Bennett could’ve matched the color, but not the “girls” theme.
