Hellsing mansion council roomJany is still wearing her original Budget Katara cosplay. It didn’t unbalance the composition, so I left it as-is.

Those stark checkered ceilings aren’t from the Hunt Valley Inn, or any other con I’ve been to — they’re from the Hellsing mansion. I always liked them as a handy trick for taking a big blank empty surface, and adding some visual variety/insta-perspective.

…and now, as promised, it’s chapter-break time. Valentine’s Day special on the 14th, anniversary special on the 21st, then into Chapter 10!

dragon cosplayIn the original art, Kara Lynn’s hat was Momo, the lemur from Avatar: the Last Airbender. In the remaster, I decided the high-contrast headgear was drawing too much visual focus, so now it’s Tiernan, from Leif & Thorn.

She never does use her shapeshifting to do a dragon impression. Jany calls that playing fair; I call it a missed opportunity.

Via BibleEncyclopedia: “Echsenarten = “species of lizard.” The German plural Eidechsenarten is used in the 1951 translation of “tsabh” in Leviticus 11:29. It may or may not be a specific type of lizard; some translations pick a likely candidate, while others just go with a variation on “[great] lizard.'”

All of which suggests that these two last met in Germany.

Shine MadelineAnd speaking of detailed scenery: that Artist’s Alley! The sheer amount of “small booths with complex displays and piles of merchandise all crammed into a small space overlapping each other” is awfully intimidating, but between the overhead shot, the “standing in front of an opaque wall of merch” shot, and the “last row before the wall” shot, I cropped it down to manageable levels.

Only recognizable cosplay is Sailor Iron Mouse in the top left. Everyone else has generic animal costumes, because WhiskerCon.

The big poster in the bottom left displays Madeline de Paris, adult vampire-hunting version, as she appears in And Shine Heaven Now. Which probably means the silhouette with cat-ears is another author cameo. And Shine is a major fandom with a big con presence.

Hotel poolPoor Jany, still hasn’t found a single person she’s on the same wavelength with.

There’s usually not much visible through the windows. For the most part, you don’t want them to have more weight than the action in the foreground, so “sunlight” or “generic tree” or “vague skyline” is a better visual choice than “elaborate detailed scenery.”

But this time you get a whole shot of the hotel pool! Always nice when I have “a later scene in a different part of the same environment” planned far-enough in advance to establish it this early.

(Also coming back later: why everyone keeps finding $20 bills.)

Moon Stick toyThis is still one of my favorite individual pages. It can be shared as a self-contained joke even if you haven’t read the rest of the chapter, and the buildup, the punchline, all landed exactly the way I wanted.

We’re all lucky that Sailor Moon came from a process of “author designs gorgeous weapons/tools for the magical girls, toy companies scramble to live up to them,” before the Pretty Cure era of “companies design a toy they can easily make with simple molded plastic, artists use that exact model to draw it into the show.”

Spaceman Spiff stripI’m awfully proud of that “Spaceman Spiff anime in the style of DBZ” shot.

Jany is sleeping in a video-screening room because she’s jet-lagged, and on top of everything else, hiking back to the hotel room feels like too much work. (WhiskerCon, like Balticon, is held in a hotel, but those rooms go fastest and cost the most. You can get a much better deal if you’re, say, a 20-minute walk away.)

Internet friends infographicInternet friendships can be great, deep, long-lasting, can turn out to be some of the best and truest relationships you’ve ever had.

Or they can turn out to be fakers, outright grifters, or simply “not as deep for the other person as you wanted them to be.

…so, the same range as meatspace friendships. Important not to mythologize them as too different.

anime plushies…although Beings all have distinct theme colors, and humans don’t, so maybe it balances out in the end, really?

Bianca is still at that Sailor Moon panel, while Sparrow (wearing an Animorphs T-shirt) has made it down to the Dealers’ Room, and found the obligatory Wall of Geek Plushies booth. I’ve only every bought one giant plush — it’s a bigger-than-life-size Kyuubey. If you ever go to a con and find me at Artist’s Alley, keep an eye out for him.

Star lampThis isn’t the first time I’ve used Hebrew Bible quotes (Timothy cited plenty in chapter 3), but is it the first time a Being has explicitly used “this line is from the POV of a human addressing God” to address their Master?

It won’t be the last time, I can tell you that. And we’ll keep coming back to idea that humans have something special, which other animals can do fine without, but Beings are incomplete unless they can get it secondhand.

Stewart and ColbertOkay, we’ve talked about how much Bennett is designed to have big  “Stephen” vibes, now let’s all notice how Vintage Patrick is designed to have big “Stephen” vibes.

(*slaps comic* this bad boy can hold so many Colbert expies in it)

In Fox’s eyes, though, he just kinda looks like a furry-adjacent Disney prince. And the other teens aren’t paying too much attention to his appearance — they’re too busy having their Being-idealizing minds blown.
