There's a Calvin & Hobbes annotation where Watterson talks about trying to give Calvin's parents a variety of "activities to be in the middle of when Calvin barges through the scene," as a low-key way to add dimension and character.
(There are a lot of good, thoughtful, inspiring Calvin & Hobbes annotations. Watterson is a gem.)
It went with a strip where Calvin's mom was repainting a piece of furniture. My goal with Connie here was to introduce her doing something that showed a bit of dimension and character, and "handy DIY furniture project" fit right in, so this was the perfect place to do an (extremely roundabout) homage.
...you'd think the image I put with this annotation would be the furniture-painting strip, but I spent way too much time trying to find the thing, and came up empty. Any readers out there with more luck?
Connie: Anything good? Sharon: Bills from the company we told to go paperless . . . more address labels from Earthjustice . . . a letter from Sparrow. She sent a drawing and asked for me to put it on the fridge! Connie: Oh, cute! Sharon (thinking): She said to send her a photo of where I put it . . . I wonder if this is for one of those online scavenger hunts . . . And she wants a call, but says I shouldn’t call her, I should just text to say when I’m free. Well, now is good. Better make sure this is charged for when she responds —

if you learn how to teleport, in a world where virtually everyone believes teleportation to be impossible, this is a good way to put ones parents in a hospital. That said, after they get used to the idea, they’ll want you to pop in all the fricking time.

Looks like posting “just a URL with no comment text” got caught in the spam filter — released now. (And thanks!)
