Annotated Chapter 26 Page 19

Munich airport at nightThe star of this page is the distinctive, and distinctly-fancy, architecture of the Munich airport.

These days I'd be able to generate a lot of it in bulk, with Clip Studio's detail brushes and transformation tools, but here? I drew all those windows, all those little figures/pillars, and most of those hanging lines by hand.

...also, here we have the suggestion that Ilsa's human-harming ability is a new development, which would explain why it hasn't been catalogued for sure in all the characters' research. (Also, why Ilsa hasn't been an in-demand shapeshifting assassin for rulers and power-brokers for the past few millennia now.) I feel like I should've just made this an established canon fact in the reveal, here, instead of leaving it open-ended.

It's another thing I'm not changing, though, even for the Master's Edition. Because I don't have better dialogue for that expressive shrug/sigh final panel, and I don't want to shoehorn something in.

Nurse (offscreen): I wouldn’t know about other Beings, but that Wolf . . . She can definitely bite.

Miranda: It used to be just a rumor, but now we have firsthand confirmation from Lightning and his Master. We’ll have to watch for her, and be ready to take her down quick.

Köhler: I still have the scar! You see!

Bianca: Is that one of those inter-Being code differences — so you could open her up and write in the code from Patrick’s and Poe’s Contracts? Or is it already there and it’s just glitching from her Master being in a coma?

Miranda: Dunno. We’ve never gotten ahold of her code, so your guess is as good as mine.

  1. What if she DOES have the “do not harm” code, but it’s written in way that not all humans qualify for it?

    1. What if every being was coded with “you can’t harm anyone in the family,” and hers is the only family that died out completely? After umpteen centuries, a survivor’s descendants would include every human, or close enough that you might not spot the difference.
I guess it partly depends if a Being knows it can hurt a human before actively trying to. At some point the ‘rule’ would be so well-known that people would stop testing it.
