Dogwood flowersThere were a couple of dogwood trees in my front yard growing up. (The kind with plain white flowers, not the dramatic pink ones.)

I climbed those trees a lot, and picked a ton of the flowers. One of the reasons I put them in Lily’s headdress is that I don’t need references to get them spot-on. I could probably draw them in my sleep.

The unnamed flower in the lower left is, of course, reseda.

Timothy: The bracts of a dogwood tree often appear in the shape of a cross, surrounding flowers which are arranged like a crown of thorns. The red-stained holes in the tips of the bracts represent the wounds caused by the nails.

White lilies in Christian tradition symbolize chastity as well as virtue. This was the symbol of the Virgin Mary’s purity. In ancient Egypt, the lily was associated with fertility.

The Camellia flower is named for the botanist and missionary Georg Josef Kamel, and is often associated with the name Camille . . .
