Annotated Chapter 30 Page 2

Riemann hypothesis graphJany is thinking of the Millennium Prize problems.

I'm not actually sure how much practical benefit any of those answers would have, for the species or the planet. But they'd make the news for being pretty cool. And it's nice that she's thinking beyond "what are tomorrow's lottery numbers" in terms of Ways To Make A Bunch Of Money Fast.

Bianca and Sparrow are both working on "major widespread help for large groups of people" questions. (Cancer is what Bianca's father died from -- I don't think I ever specified what type. If he was still alive, she'd ask about curing that one.)

Bennett and Timothy are both thinking about their personal feelings. Which is fine. It's a hypothetical situation anyway, they might as well.

Bianca: How to cure cancer. Wait, does that count as “one” question? Since there’s lots of different cancers? I’d ask about whichever one kills the most people.

Jany: You know those big unanswered math questions? The kind that have million-dollar prizes if someone can solve them? I’d ask one of those.

Sparrow: How to minimize the damage of climate change. Wait — we already know how to do that. How to convince people to minimize the damage of climate change.

Bennett: It would be, uh . . .

Bennett (thinking): Does Stu love me?

Bennett: . . . personal.

Timothy: If you’d asked me that a few years ago, I would’ve gone with “is there a God?” But now . . . I don’t think having that answer would make me happy either way, you know?

I’d rather ask for the best way to find my soulmate. — or rather, since I assume those don’t exist, somebody as close as humanly possible.

  1. Millennium prize problems include if P=NP. While the answer to this could be just interesting math, one variant of answer, the constructive proof that P=NP, is universal key to almost all cryptography, but also something which would help enormously in all kinds of research, for example protein structure prediction. VERY practical thing.
