Women huggingBetween the original drawing and the trade-paperback remastering, I finessed a bunch of the art by redrawing specific lines, re-shaping the forms, adding new textures or shadows or little details in specific places. But the list of times I flat-out redrew a whole panel is pretty short.

That hug in the middle left is one of them.

Even back when I drew the original, I wasn’t thrilled with it. Having the excuse to replace it was a huge relief. Don’t draw hugs without pose references, kids.

Sparrow: Mom!

Ms. Applebaum: Baby girl! Come give your mother a hug.

Sparrow: I’ll get your bag. By the way, our fridge is almost empty . . .

Ms. Applebaum: I’ll take you shopping, of course! Aside from that, how are you doing? Tell me everything. Is the job going well?

Sparrow: Internship. And yes!

Ms. Applebaum: You’re working to change the world. You can call it a job!

Money isn’t the important part! Why, back in my day–

— Oh, hello! I see you have new roommates!

How cute!

Sparrow: Ah, yes . . . Forgot to mention — we got pets!
