Sometimes, when you’re up against a deadline and just want to get the page out rather than stewing in overtime, you cut a few artistic corners.
This isn’t one of those times. From the start of the chapter, when I thought about the staging of this particular Shocking Realization, I had “stark single face against an all-black background” in mind.
Bennett (thinking): Cybele knows.
She can’t read. And I’ve never told her. But appearing as a six-year-old . . . being such a perfect distraction . . . she must have planned it all from the start. Somehow, she knew.
Cybele: Tum te dum de dum . . .
Cybele (thinking): There’s only one way out of here. And it ‘s out of my reach . . .
