I also grew up on Calvin & Hobbes, including all the strips with snowmen, winter adventures, and Calvin-Susie bickering.
Granted, baby Bennett here doesn’t exactly have that vibe. But I don’t think I would’ve drawn this scenario at all without that reading material in mind.

Boy (tiny!Cybele’s-Master): Here.
You can use this for the nose. Merry Christmas.
Girl: Keen! Look, he likes it!
It’s neato! Thank you!

Boy: Aaahhh! Cooties! Ick ick ick!
I probably didn’t watched enough Calvin & Hobbes because I still don’t understand why is this strip here.
…I mean, it’s a random bit of backstory for a present-day character. Same reason every other page in this interlude is here.
The other backstories tell us something. This seems, like, too random. Originally I though that the girl would also be someone and this is like one of their first interactions, but we never saw her again, did we?
Since Bennett hadn’t been revealed yet, I think it’s mostly a funny re-interpretation of the balaclava. And I guess a hint that he’s gay.
