Patrick (thinking): It’s not supposed to feel like this. Ever. Every Master is the most important person in the world . . . until they’re not.
When we belong to someone, we can’t imagine them dying. But after they do, we get to belong to the next one.
If he was still my Master, he could hurt me in any way and I ‘d still love him. And if he was dead, I could forget about him.
Instead I’m . . . this. Something that the experts don’t have a word for.
Yeah, I could do without the pang of rejection, too. I do find it interesting, given woebegone, crestfallen, disconsolate, wretched, dispirited, glum, morose, downcast, downhearted, dejected, despondent, dismayed, heartsick, and forlorn, there doesn’t seem to be one that actually means exactly this. Grieving, mournful, lament, regret have related variations, but still not this.
I *think* it’s language rot. Maybe I was just confused when I was younger, but I’d thought heartsick was almost this, once upon a time, though maybe still a bit broader than this.
I just realized that Patrick’s unhealthy attachment to his previous Master could be related to the unnatural way their Contract was broken. Clean your code before deleting yourself from it, guys!
