Chapter Fifteen Page 27
Walker: Would I be correct in saying that money is tight for you right now?
Jany: Well, yeah. So thank you again for this trip! It’s like a paid holiday.
Walker: Indeed . . . Of course, it isn’t just a holiday. You’re being compensated for the help you and your Being are giving me in my research. And it would help all the more if you were available to do this on a . . . long-term basis. So, Jany . . .
How would you like a job?
Boston.
Bianca: . . . Are you hiding in a pillow fort?
Sparrow: Yes. Yes, Bianca, I am. I have officially applied for a hundred jobs, and still haven’t been hired once. What am I doing wrong, huh? I have a good education! And it’s not like I’m picky!
I’d even take a job as an evil minion at this point!
Bianca: . . . I don’t think that’s a thing, Sparrow.
Chapter 15 ~ End
We know Walker is bad news. Poor Jany thinks she has just been given the opportunity of a lifetime. Now I’m worried what will happen if Jany and Kara Lynn find the Vulture in the basement.
Poor Sparrow. A pillow fort is the best idea I have for that realization too.
This is probably foreshadowing. Sparrow’s going to wind up working for Cohen and/or Bennet
Wait, just wait, this can’t be legal, Jany’s flipping sixteen right? How the HELL is Walker gonna offer a minor a job, even as an intern? She’s rich, but I’m damn sure that her parents raising hell over this isn’t gonna make matters any easier.
People turn legal at age 16 in the UK and the Commonwealth countries.
Unless I’m mistaken, legal age in the UK doesn’t factor into this, because she’d be working in the US, so US laws would apply. Legal age in general doesn’t have much to do with it, as legal working ages are highly dependent on the type of work, country, and whether the minor in question has finished secondary education, etc. (I was recently shocked to hear that in the US, many children work in tobacco farms – and this is perfectly legal, as long as their parents own the farm.) Wikipedia is incomplete on the subject, but it seems that the very broad-strokes rule in the US is that minors under 16 (Jany is 17, btw) may work as long as the work isn’t dangerous and doesn’t interfere with their schooling. Obviously, each state has their own jurisdiction on the subject, and I can’t even remember in which state Walker is based. I’d be more interested to see, though, what are the legal ramifications of Jany moving to the US as a minor and against her parents’ will. That would probably be a bigger issue than her having a supposedly part-time and physically light job.
I’m sure Walker have companies based in multiple states and can choose the one best for this. She certainly have some in Ireland and Dutch … :-)
“Dutch” is not a country, but I’m glad you seem to be able to find tax avoidance so amusing.
Maaaan this is so cool. So annoyed I’ve caught up, because now I have to wait for *ugh* UPDATES, like with Gunnerkrigg and Nimona….
Seriously loving this, love the characters, love the humour (Bennett is especially hilarious), love the geeky references (though I skipped the Cylon Theory page because I still haven’t gotten around to finishing BSG). I love how I’m still not entirely sure if “relationship with your being” is creepy or not. I mean, it IS creepy….but it’s not necessarily wrong. aaaah moral ambiguity :D
And at this point my “oh dear god no no no no don’t accept any offers or something REALLY BAD will happen etc. etc. etc.” warnings are going off overtime. Bells and whistles and flashing spinny lights and klaxons and car alarms and ooga-ooga horns. All the things ever.
This will not end well.
I was in Sparrow’s situation and that’s why I went to coding school. Haha!
