Happy Halloween! Have some apocalyptic monsters to keep you in the mood.
Walker: The Book of Revelation is the last book in the Bible. It describes a series of visions had by a prophet named John — possibly John the Apostle — about the end of the world. You have, at least, heard of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse? This is where they came from.
There’s more. Trumpets and scrolls, bowls of plague poured out over the world, all kinds of dragons and monsters . . .
. . . hail and blood falling from the sky, smoke rising from the abyss . . .
. . . angels like great fiery wheels with eyes . . .
Jany: Wait . . . monster angels are literally a thing in your Bible?
Walker: I might mention that psychoactive mushrooms were certainly “a thing” when John was writing.
Jany: Ahhh.
Notice the eyes from the chapter cover behind Jany in the second-to-last panel.
The incorporation of the Book of Revelation into this fantasy world is super exciting to me.
Note that what Walker say seems to be true for our world as well. Quick googling shows http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ophanim and http://entheology.com/peoples/revelation-a-psychdelic-vision/ …
Huh, I didn’t know that. Makes a certain amount of sense, though.
So she knows about the psychedelic visions part but is still basing her plans on a pseudoapocrapha. To point out what that is, an apocrapha are books that were edited out of the Bible by the council of Nicea because they were determined to not be old enough, hoaxes, ect…to be written by the apostles. The pseudoapocrapha are lines, books, passages, whose validity is questionable due to a change in tone, ideas, ect…that are normally found with those authors; but can’t be certain if they are or aren’t legitimate…so got left in (doesn’t make sense that usually goes the other way when things can be doubted) Revelations has the dumbest reason for being left in…the book needed an ending. and they had no intention of using the Jewish Apocalypse (which they removed from the Old Testament).
PS: Monstrous angels can be found throughout the Bible, in fact its their natural state and why they say “Be not Afraid” when they appear. Heck the Cherubim was notable for being “alive” while most angels have gemstone, fire, metallic appearances. There is one with a body like gems and a face like lightning.
Although I could have sworn many of the monstrous eldritch abomination like angels were also to be found in the Koran.
I don’t have much to say besides pointing out it’s spelled Apocrypha. I know the word and sat here 5 minutes trying to figure it out.
I know angels make plently appearances in the Quran, Idk about their cescription. Another thing I was wondering – the bible is applicable for Muslims as well, is it so unlikely that Jany would knownothing about the big strokes?
Yes, that is what troubles me and makes me think that Walker has far more evidence than she is going to show.
Just fyi, the Koran has both the Old and New Testaments in it, so Jayn would be familiar with these references (if she read the Koran).
The Koran covers a lot of the same history as the Old and New Testaments, so there are a lot of people and stories you could be familiar with from either version. But the material covered in Revelation isn’t in both.
Fun fact in the real world the book of revelation was a piece of political satire criticising rome and several well known politicians of the time
