The depths of that night.
Reseda: Looks like Cybele’s reign of terror was cut short.
Patrick: Can you find any details?
Reseda: Working on it . . . Ooh, this connection’s fast!
Being Subdued in Boston Subway
Mr. Cohen speaks to reporters with the culprit Being
visible in the background.
BOSTON — Blah blah blah important news-type material goes here. Filler text, don’cha know.
Not visible in the photo or on film is the glowing sigil suspended under the Being, but according to our reporters on the scene, it was totally there.
Police attempted to take the Being into custody, until Mr. Cohen pointed out, “Listen, do YOU have a holding cell that’s been put through rigorous stress tests by eighteen individual Beings? Well, do you? Didn’t think so.”
The Being itself said “No comment” and stuck out its tongue a lot.
Reseda: Uh . . . How good are you at reading English?
Patrick: Oh, I ‘m pretty much an expert on that now. Listen: “Being.” That’s an easy one. Then “Sub–subdued . . .”
Reseda: Forget it. Just help me scan the page for anything that says “Video” or “Audio.”
(pop!)
A MAIL HAS YOU!
FROM: Mom
RE: Visit?
Of course I would
love to come u…
Patrick: IT KNOWS WE’RE WATCHING.
Reseda: That’s an automated email alert, you nit.
I don’t like this. Cohen is able to imprison beings on his own. I don’t care if he does have the cell, if I were in this world, I’d feel a lot more comfortable if there were detectives around it. I dunno, what do you guys think?
Detectives around it to question the Master of captured Being. Being’s rights are murky, but their Master’s aren’t.
Patrick is at his most adorable here. :3
Actually, while Mr. Cohen’s motivations and likely behaviors are still unknown so far, I have to say I like his style. I especially like his pointed commentary to the cops in the news article!
And while it’s a bit of a stretch, I wonder if Mr. Cohen might not be Sparrow’s uncle or something. Not that two Jews occurring in the same strip are or even should be automatically related (Boston has a pretty decent number of Jewish delis, last I heard) but it’d be convenient!
Back to Mr. Cohen – I don’t get any immediate sense of evil from him, or a likelihood that he’d torture Cybele. If anything, he seems more put out by having to risk helping get her under control NOT WORKING (in front of an audience, no less). Seems more like the equivalent of a self-employed gumshoe who gets called in and then has to fight to actually get /paid/ by the people who called him in. Dangerous, thankless work for what? Oy gevalt.
Maybe we’ll finally get to see what kind of mad woman (I use the term in jest) raised Sparrow.
A first time commenter here, but I just wanted to say that Patrick’s face in the last panel is the cutest thing I’ve seen in a long time.
Thank you! It was a lot of fun to draw.
This begs the question of how Reseda was able to find that article so easily. Being unable to read – and consequently unable to type – would make it rather difficult to search the Internet.
They can read, it’s just slow and difficult. Reseda probably went to Google News, typed in “Boston” and “being” (two words she would have memorized), and scanned for likely headlines. It’s only big blocks of text that give her and Patrick trouble.
The animals using the computer is just so wonderfully adorable.
Sparrow sleeps in cargo pants too? I wanna be her pal.
Question: If Beings can’t read English, then how can they use the internet? They have to type in search words, but since they can’t read English they shouldn’t be able to do that, right?
They’re not completely hopeless at dealing with English, just very, very slow at it. Give them enough time, and they can make it through a couple of search keywords on a news website.
