Chapter: Chapter Three
Characters: Bianca Washington, Brother Alvah, Emir Mattei, Patrick, St. Lily, Timothy (Camellia) Mattei
Patrick: Humans! You always get so worked up about death.
Timothy: Oh, don’t worry, Lily got worked up about it too. If you’d seen her . . .
Timothy (past): Sister Lily! Can you really do this? If you’re not sure, tell him!
Emir: It’s all right.
My brother sometimes struggles with his faith. I’ll go first. That way he’ll see that there is nothing to fear.
Timothy: Emir, you can’t–
Emir: But I have to. Am I not my brother’s keeper?
Alvah: Let us pray.
Timothy (voiceover): For a moment, I almost believed. Because Lily did . . . something.
Okay, Erin, seriously, can you make this any more creepy?
It’s not exactly a premise that lends itself to kittens and rainbows, I’m afraid…
Now I want to see Emir’s body explode into rainbows and kittens!
I get that, but you’re edging straight into World of Darkness territory here in how you’re treating this cult.
I have a feeling that the answer is going to be no, but do Beings have multiple lives or is Patrick’s assertion on how humans get too worked up over death a reflection of his personal experiences?
Oh, and how attatched are Beings to their masters? Is it uncommon for a Being to go insane if they are very attached to their master and the master dies? Do most Beings adopt an attitude of indifference to their masters in order to cope with this circumstance?
Aw, now you’re just asking me to spell out things that will be naturally revealed as the characters develop.
Every Being is different! Reading the story will give you the details.
I imagine the cycle of “We’re immortal and they’re not” would tire them out emotionally and almost cause an indifferent attitude toward their master, even as they are compelled to obey. It would also explain why they might do horrible things at their master’s command, since they know that the next master will be along eventually to order them to do something else entirely.
I suppose that isn’t something Patrick would understand. Though I am curious about how he would deal with his master’s death (or how any Being would, for that matter. I’d imagine it varies.).
Also, augh, Timothy get out of there while you still can! You have to live to explain all of this craziness.
I think this is why Tim is still here to tell about it.
Humans get worked up about death because humans came about through a process of essentially avoiding it as much as possible… obviously.
If humans never got worked up about death, there would be significantly less effort put forth to avoid it, and thus far fewer humans… which I believe would be a vastly preferable situation, but it just couldn’t happen.
As to why Patrick is getting worked up about humans getting worked up about death though… that is unknown. The little dude seems to get pissed off about just about everything.
