María: All right, Saxon, enough is enough! S-stop playing dead! Tell me what’s going on!
Saxon: I’m not allowed to say! Not even to you. Not until it happens.
María: Until what happens? How will you know?
Saxon: My Lord says it should be hard to miss . . .

OH GOOD SAXON ISN’T DEAD I WAS WORRIED.
That out of the way, I am definitely getting a Fullmetal Alchemist vibe out of that last panel.
Yep, definitely a SPOILER FOR LIKE, THE VERY FINAL ARC OF THE MANGA/BROTHERHOOD
Nationwide Transmutation Circle vibe there.
I’m sure if it would be THAT easy to kill a being someone would notice.
beat me to it, this time, definite Full Metal Alchemist vibe…granted they weren’t the first to do the giant transmutation circle bit, but they did it the most memorably.
Since I haven’t watched/read the other show/manga the rest of the comments are talking about, all I see is a variation on the same magic signs that you’ve used consistently. And if Josh, Maria, and Saxon head over to the part of Europe that will eventually be France and start the Merovingian family, I think that covers nearly all the religious and conspiracy theory tales. :D
Long short of it: crazy guy who is actually a centuries old Humunculas has created a transmutation circle that covers an entire country, with the intent of killing every last living thing in said country, using their life energy to force what her perceives to be “God” to appear and give him the power to merge with it. (Although what would have happened had he actually touched the “Gate of Truth” can’t be said for certain). Basically it was a man turning himself into an Eldritch Abomination to force another Eldritch Abomination to appear and try to become one.
