Transgender Day of Remembrance 2017
Honoring the memories of all the trans people who have been killed in 2017.
(And remember: no matter what you hear from scaremongering politicians, the list of victims of sexual assault from trans people in bathrooms is holding steady at 0.)
Because TDOR falls on a Monday this year, a lot of the vigils and memorials were held over the weekend. You’ll have to google to find out whether there are any still upcoming in your area.
And if you want to support the cause with money, here’s a list of trans-supporting organizations (compiled in February) that could use your donations.
Sexual assault victims from trans people in bathrooms? What?
There’s a lot of politicians claiming we should be more vigilant about banning trans people from bathrooms because they think trans women in a bathroom with cis women/girls are inappropriate (because they imagine there’s an increased risk of rape to the cis women/girls).
It’s nonsensical, I know. On behalf of America, we apologize.
Even if a rapist were trans (I don’t see it likely but theoretically possible), I don’t see how a bathroom code is going to stop them.
Bills and laws are generally fairly ineffective in stopping crime. I suppose EU weapon law could be thick enough to stop bullet, but you would need to hold it at correct place.
The law is a starting place, and then you need enforcement on top of it.
The problem here is that rape is already against the law, so you’re not going to get any extra benefits or protection from adding laws about where people pee.
That’s what all the fuss about the US state of North Carolina was last year.
